Despite Distance... > Samuel Abegglen

My work explores identities and the ways that people choose to bear them. The fear of otherness has a great impact on the ways that many people choose to identify and label themselves. Unfortunately through this process, many fall victim to the most widely held identity, the conformist. My work is an attempt to return to myself by cultivating authenticity through embracing repressed identities. I work primarily with colored pencil and watercolor. By combining realism and intentional negative space, I use mark making to create an intimacy that allows the viewer to finish the story of the subject in each particular work.
