Max McInnis Is a furniture designer and sculptor based out of St Paul, Minnesota. Born and raised in Davenport, Iowa Max went on to study furniture design at the Rhode Island School of Design. And works out of their studio in St Paul today. They have had the distinct pleasure to show their work in Detroit, Minneapolis, Providence, and New York City.
Their work focuses on creating new realities from the cultural landscape of the Upper Midwest. This is an evolving landscape the work is pulled from. In college their time was spent learning how to fabricate pieces, ideate in succession and incorporate storytelling in a contemporary manner into their work. Through college Max constantly was re- examining their relationship to the Upper Midwest. A great deal of work was reconciling with the culture they grew up in. A lot of the narrative for years had been that gay kids have to leave for the coasts. Stories like Mathew Sheppard and the intensity of the right wing’s anti gay anti everything propaganda were the baseline. Raised Catholic in a deeply angry time led to a deeply sour relationship with their home. In recent years that anger has given way to an appreciation for the people here. Age has given some context to the difficulties people of the Midwest have experienced in the early 21st century. Learning to love your home can be hard. But, there is intense beauty in the Midwest.
